Training Description

Listening to the Mystery is a 3-month hybrid training program that weaves together interactive online learning with a 3-day immersive, experiential retreat in Berkeley, California. The program focuses on working skillfully and ethically with expanded states of consciousness as pathways to inner knowing, relationship with the sacred natural world, and meaningful connection within community. Designed for mental health professionals, facilitators, and experienced practitioners, this advanced training offers a comprehensive foundation in ethical, therapeutic, relational, and embodied approaches to psychedelic-informed best practices.

The training is grounded in a shared understanding that expanded states invite a practice of deep listening: listening to what is emerging from within; to what becomes available through attunement to nature; to the collective wisdom that arises through shared experience; and to the growth edges revealed through reflection and dialogue. Participants are encouraged to explore how their professional and personal practices can be refined through humility, discernment, and learning from teachers, peers, and non-ordinary states of consciousness.

Through these practices, participants will develop a greater capacity to support individuals in navigating toward their own sense of divinity, inner wisdom, and a reverent relationship with life. Emphasis is placed on cultivating presence, ethical responsibility, and relational accountability when engaging with expanded states of consciousness and the medicines that may open them.

The program integrates structured online learning with small-group dialogue and experiential practice. The online component consists of 8 live, interactive Zoom sessions led by experienced instructors, with an emphasis on relational depth, shared inquiry, reflective practice, and skill development over time. This cohort-based format supports continuity, trust, and integration, drawing on effective community-centered learning models and peer-supported exploration. Participants also receive access to an extensive digital learning library of on-demand courses and webinars, including an InnerEthics® Level 1 Certification.

The 3-day in-person retreat will be held at the Root and Bloom Institute, a beautiful new center in Berkeley, California, where we will create an intentional ceremonial space where participants engage in experiential learning (Holotropic Breathwork®) with a strong focus on:

  • Ethical and personalized preparation and intention setting

  • Practices for attuned presence, shared reflection, and reciprocal witnessing

  • Grounding integration approaches, including creative expression, art-making, and nature-based reflection

  • Giving and receiving thoughtful, constructive feedback within a respectful and well-held community

Throughout the training, participants are invited to consider expanded states not as isolated experiences, but as part of a longer arc of relationship, responsibility, and integration. Attention is given to how insights take shape in lived experience, expressed creatively, and woven into everyday life, professional practice, and service to others.

This program is well-suited for those who feel called to deepen their engagement with sacred and expanded-state practice within a cohort of experienced practitioners who value depth, ethical integrity, community connection, embodied knowing, and reverence.

The dates for this program are July - September 2026, with an in-person retreat in Berkeley on September 18-20, 2026.

The Guide Inside
Caitlin Wild
Instructor
Caitlin Wild is a wilderness guide, musician, and facilitator of Wild Soul Awakenings. A student of wild lands, her soul-calling is to be a bridge between humans and Nature. She has led both traditional and experimental wilderness workshops internationally and has devoted her life to re-membering us humans back to our wild soul. Using the modalities of Hakomi, EcoTherapy, sacred ritual, psychology, plant medicines, and internal family systems (IFS), she lovingly slices through the illusions we humans hold of separation from the web of life. When we access and embody the truth of our earthly inter-being and open the door to the well of strength and resilience of the more-than-human web, wholeness spontaneously arises.

Joko (Jo) Wunderly
The name Jo! is a spiritual name that she received early in her medicine work, signifying the energy of Manjusri, the bodhisattva that cuts through delusion. In mid 2025, Jo received zen dharma transmission, Inka Shomei, and with it her name is changing to, Joko, which translates to “accumulating good”. Joko was introduced to psychedelic healing in 2015, being guided several times per year since. A vision during an expanded state journey helped her turn her own healing into an opportunity for others. She founded Vision Walkers Collective, a 501c3, in 2023 and is directing Root and Bloom Institute as part of the nonprofit. She’s also the director of a private retreat sanctuary in Nevada City, called mossvillage.org (founded in 2015). Joko is dedicated to developing human evolution ecosystems – safe and nurturing spaces – where practitioners and teachers can work with clients and students in meaningful ways. For each of us to become stewards of change in a world in need of deep healing, Joko has felt called to explore and share diverse skills for resolving our personal trauma and shadow. She also sees a need for zen practice in today's psychedelic grassroots movement, as a way to ground and regulate the nervous system. Joko is in her element when she’s designing and implementing healing spaces, and when leading retreats using expanded states, shadow and blindspot inquiry, empathetic communication, embodied Zen koan meditation, conversation from the heart, spending time in nature, and mentoring the next generation of healers. With the imminent opening of Root and Bloom Institute, Joko currently is engaged in designing an Opening Series that will showcase workshop leaders and somatic therapy trainers. She is also co-developing RBI Programming aimed at supporting fundamental cultural change.

Mark Nicolson
Instructor
For over thirty years, Mark Nicolson has consulted with individuals and their organizations around the world, supporting the reimagination of leadership. This is a leadership based in self-awareness, transformation and learning. Mark offers coaching and facilitation for leaders, top teams and organizations who are committed to responding to life's challenges with truth, beauty and justice. He has trained in two different orientations for working with plant medicine. First, in the mainstream medical orientation, including the MAPS certification program for MDMA-assisted psychotherapists. Second, in a shamanic tradition. This is a holistic and spiritual orientation. My teachers for this work are connected to the Mazatec lineage of Maria Sabina who passed on the wisdom of the mushroom to Gordon Wasson. Mark has a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Meridian University and an MBA from Stanford. His doctoral focus was the potential for MDMA to shift our sense of self from a pathological perspective to a mythological one. He offers a variety of client services, retreats, and workshops worldwide.

Testimonials
I recently took both the MDMA and Psilocybin courses, and they both seemed largely illustrative. Its content is very complete and professional...the design of the courses has a good level of aesthetics and didactics. The ease of being able to take the course at your own pace complements the package perfectly. I highly recommend them!
Dr. Yaqui Andrés Martinez
Jennifer Allen was an amazing leader and host. To be held with integrity and compassion, professionalism and humility was a powerful setting for personal transformation. Healing and reclaiming my parts was life-affirming. I take the insights and lessons with me as I return to work with my patients, my family and myself. I strongly recommend this workshop to all practitioners working with expanded states.
Mary Derlacki, NP
It’s a fantastic course! I learned so much more about the current research in this course than I’ve seen anywhere else. It’s very comprehensive. The depth of work that’s gone into it is very clear and much appreciated.
Jennifer Rotermund
I have taken many ethics courses throughout my academic history, none of which covered the specific concepts contained within non-ordinary states of consciousness. This training will help me to look through a different lens when doing self-inquiry into the therapeutic relationship involved in working with these states.
Cierra Marrufo, C.M., M.S., Om Valley
Psychedelic Support has been a wonderful launch-pad out of the entheogen closet! As someone involved in professional clinical spaces as a therapist and also in medicine church spaces as a shamanic practitioner, I've found great benefit from the education as well as being personally connected to a safe network of like-minded psychedelic renaissance folks of various specialties. Our shared resources and collaborations are collectively taking this movement to the next level. Thanks to the Psychedelic Support team for bringing people and knowledge together!
Sarah, PLPC
I found the course modules easy to use and complete, and the material accurate. I loved the presentation concerning the social neuroscience of MDMA; this content might continue to evolve over time. I also appreciated attempts to connect levels of analysis, from receptors to setting. The scope of the course will mean greater need for revision as new information is gained, but also permits a more accurate understanding of what MDMA is doing, and specifically what it is doing in a psychotherapeutic context.
