Dave Johnson, LPCC
Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor
San Diego CA
Our work together starts with understanding you—your values, strengths, and the specific challenges you want to work on. I take a collaborative approach, partnering with you to create a customized treatment plan that aligns with your goals and supports meaningful change. Together, we’ll identify what you want to get out of therapy—whether it’s managing stress, building healthier relationships, improving focus, healing past wounds, or finding clarity in a transition. We’ll regularly check in on your progress using short questionnaires, so you can see what’s working and where we might pivot. Between sessions, you’ll be encouraged to try out strategies or reflect on ideas that we’ve discussed—whether that’s practicing a new coping skill, setting a boundary, or observing a pattern in your thoughts or behaviors. These real-world experiences often become some of the richest material for growth. I try not to refer to it as "homework," but it totally kind of is just that.
Above all, you’ll find a warm, respectful, and grounded space where you can be yourself without judgment. Therapy is a process—and I’m here to walk alongside you as you build a life that feels more connected, purposeful, and true to who you are.
Hi! I’m Dave, a licensed in California (LPCC), Arizona (LPC), and Nevada (CPC), and nationally certified (NCC) with nearly two decades experience as a mental health provider. I earned my Master’s in Counseling from the University of San Diego in 2014, a program accredited by CACREP for its commitment to professional excellence.
My practice is especially focused on adults navigating big questions and inner shifts—whether that’s managing ADHD, rebuilding after trauma, healing from anxiety or depression, working through relationship or communication issues, or redefining your path in life or career. I have advanced experience supporting individuals with co-occurring disorders, mood disorders, psychosis, and exploring psychedelic-assisted therapies as part of recovery and growth.
Clients often come to me because they’re successful on the outside but feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or disconnected on the inside. Together, we explore your story with compassion and honesty, so you can reconnect with your values, gain clarity, and live more authentically.
I’ve had the privilege of working with a diverse range of communities—including LGBTQ+ clients, people in recovery, first-generation professionals, Native American and immigrant families, individuals living with HIV, and those impacted by systems like foster care and homelessness. I bring cultural humility and lived experience to this work. As a therapist, I believe it’s important to show up as a real person. I’m a grandson of immigrants, with roots in Mexico 🇲🇽, Sweden 🇸🇪, and Ireland 🇮🇪. I identify as a cisgender man (he/him/él), Gen X, Catholic, trauma survivor, and proud member of the LGBTQ+ community. I’m also a husband and adoptive dad to a beautiful daughter.
1. Individual Psychotherapy
For adults, teens, and older adults navigating life transitions, anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship challenges, identity development, or mental health diagnoses. I provide a warm, affirming, and goal-oriented space where therapy is tailored to your strengths, needs, and personal values. Sessions are available in-person or via secure telehealth, and may also mobile services (at home or school) as needed.
2. Clinical Supervision
Independent Clinical Supervisor in California, Arizona, and Nevada, I provide structured, strengths-based supervision to pre-licensed associate clinicians (APCC, AMFT, ASW). My supervision style is collaborative, developmental, and focused on clinical growth, cultural humility, and ethical excellence within a humanistic framework.
3. Psychedelic-Assisted Therapy
For individuals who feel “stuck” or have found limited relief with traditional talk therapy or psychiatric medications, I offer psychedelic-assisted therapy as part of a comprehensive, harm-reduction-informed treatment plan. This service includes preparation, integration support, and collaboration with prescribers and facilitators when appropriate. Clients considering this option must meet eligibility criteria and be medically cleared before participation.
