Emotional Healing With Ayahuasca, Why Do We Need It?
We are physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual beings. Maybe we don’t all agree on this definition, but without a doubt, humans are emotional. Our emotional nature sets us aside from animals as well as from computers, zombies, and artificial intelligence.
Our emotions allow us to cultivate deeper connections to each other and to all living things.
More than that, science has proven that the heart has more power and intelligence than the brain.
Cutting-edge research shows not only that the brain sends signals to the heart but also that the heart actually sends more signals to the brain – thereby affecting emotional processing, such as cognitive functions. Emotional stress creates incoherent heart signals that weaken the body, cause loss of energy, and increase stress levels.
Emotional Expression
In the first few years of their lives, children have natural and healthy emotional expression. If you observe a small child, you can see the emotions arise, express, and let go in a natural and instinctual way, without any judgment or censorship on the child’s part. They just feel, express, and move on. They know instinctively that all emotions are valid and meant to be felt and expressed.
Emotion Is Energy in Motion
The most obvious purpose of emotions is to be felt and expressed.
Beyond this, emotions are part of our internal guidance system, helping us to navigate this world.
And most of all, through an open heart, we can connect to the divine and access our higher wisdom and guidance.
The Big Emotional Shut Down – Basic Misunderstanding
Most of us are taught at an early age that some emotions are good/positive, like joy or happiness, and some emotions are bad/negative, like anger or sadness, and are not meant to be felt and expressed. We learn very quickly which emotions can be expressed and are rewarded, and which emotions have to be suppressed and are punished. But to think that some emotions are good and some are bad is a basic misunderstanding. All emotions are valid and meant to be felt and expressed.
A general example would be when girls are told not to be angry, and boys are told not to be sad.
Most parents teach their children to be emotionally dysfunctional, but they don’t know that as their parents did the same to them. On top of all this, we don’t learn anything in school about emotions or emotional expression, so we have no idea that we are doing it wrong.
What Happens With Suppressed Emotions?
Most people think if you suppress an emotion (meaning do not allow yourself to really feel it and express it), it will disappear, poof! But this is not what happens.
When you suppress an emotion, you stop the energy flow in your system and, therefore, create an energetic blockage – an imbalance that will affect your life in various ways.
Let’s stay with the example of suppressed anger.
Most women are taught not to feel and express anger and instead to be a ‘nice, obedient’ girl.
When somebody suppresses anger long term, that suppressed energy will manifest in different ways to find expression and release. Often, it is projected onto others; sometimes, it explodes without control and lashes out; sometimes, it is passive-aggressive – hardly noticeable – and if anger is turned inward, it becomes depression.
Suppressing any emotion, in general, will always disempower the individual because it takes a lot of energy to keep those emotions under a lid and hide them 24/7.
Emotions are energy that wants to move toward equilibrium and balance; therefore, it is impossible to suppress emotions effectively. They will just come out in other, more destructive ways, and they will manifest in the end.
Reclaim Your Right to Feel
So, what can we do to restore our emotional health and balance?
To take back the power over our emotional nature, we first have to empty our suppressed emotions and truly let go. Second, we have to learn healthy emotional expression and put it into practice to create new behavior. Third, we must serve as an example and inspiration to others to do the same.
