The Work of Spiritual Health Professionals
In the emerging field of psychedelic-assisted therapy, spiritual health professionals are uniquely equipped to hold the emotional, existential, and mystical dimensions of the healing journey. According to Harvey Schwartz, “The limited presence of SHPs—pan-denominational ministers, clergy, chaplains, pastors, and others working at the intersection of spirituality, religion, and mental health—is arguably one of the most significant oversights in the ongoing ‘psychedelic renaissance’.”
Psychedelics have the potential not only to restore an individual’s connection to the sacred but also to offer an opportunity for direct personal revelation. These experiences can be overwhelming and challenging to integrate into one’s life. Spiritual health professionals are trained in interfaith spiritual care, trauma-informed presence, navigating non-ordinary states of consciousness, and integrating spiritually transformative experiences. Additionally, clinical chaplains receive training in counseling, communication techniques, and crisis intervention. Personally, I have worked in the pediatric trauma zone in a children’s hospital, palliative care and hospice, and currently, in behavioral health. My certifications in psychedelic therapy led me to my current work as a grief and bereavement counselor and an integration support specialist for clients following psychedelic therapy.
Although many spiritual health care professionals have not trained as psychedelic chaplains, most were trained to provide a sacred container for the often ineffable experiences that arise in expanded states. These refer to encounters with timelessness, divine intelligence, archetypal imagery, or deep ancestral memory. Frequently, these threshold experiences can awaken awe and reverence, but they can also unveil grief, fear, or disorientation as old identities dissolve.
Holistic Care in Practice
In a holistic care team, the spiritual health professional complements the work of therapists, physicians, and guides. They do so by attending to the mystical through focusing on the symbolic meaning-making process that clinical models may overlook. The therapist focuses on the psychological aspects of mental health and healing, while the physician focuses on physiological safety. In contrast, the spiritual health professional listens for the unfolding narrative of the soul. They gently accompany the individual as they weave and integrate their encounter with the mystical back into the fabric of daily life. In my work as a psychedelic clinical chaplain, I honor mystery, bear witness to the unseen, and offer integration for indescribable, cosmic experiences. In general, spiritual health professionals ensure that healing is not only effective but also whole—rooted in connection to self, others, the earth, and the transcendent.
“Our survival depends not on choosing sides, but holding paradox.”
— Jude O’Higgins, PhD
As a clinical chaplain, most people assume that my work revolves around religion. But in truth, my training has focused on neuro-psychoanalytical psychotherapy and its clinical application in healthcare. This background enables me to meet patients where they are—religiously, spiritually, or otherwise. I do not evangelize, nor do I preach. In fact, I have only a cursory knowledge of the Bible, which is why it surprised me, after my morning meditation and gratitude practice, to find myself contemplating one of its most iconic stories: the story of Noah’s Ark.
Integration & Sharing a Spiritual Message
As someone who works in the metaphoric realms of psychedelic chaplaincy, this narrative arrived like a dream image. It asked not for literal belief but for interpretation and integration. What would it mean to consider the ark, the flood, and the rainbow not as historical artifacts but as metaphors for surviving the current global turbulence? What does it mean to build an ark in an age of collapse?
This piece is my attempt at integrating the unexpected information that came to me during my morning practice. In addition, it is an offering—a guide for those who, like me, are seeking spiritual and psychological tools to navigate any storm.
Retelling the Story: A Metaphorical Framework for Collective Survival
1. The State of the World: Violence Filled the Earth
- Biblical Reference: Humanity has become corrupt, violent, and disconnected from divine will.
- Modern Metaphor: We live in an era of ecological degradation, war, political upheaval, and spiritual amnesia.
- Application: Acknowledge what is. Transformation begins with clarity. We must name the reality of climate collapse, cultural fragmentation, and collective exhaustion.
2. Noah Hears the Divine Instruction
- Biblical Reference: Noah walks with God and receives a message.
- Modern Metaphor: The Noah archetype is the one who listens—to intuition, to Spirit, to the body.
- Application: Begin tuning in. What is your inner voice telling you to prepare for? What is the soul calling you to build?
3. Building the Ark
- Biblical Reference: Noah constructs an ark according to divine specifications.
- Modern Metaphor: The ark is the container you build for your own resilience.
- Application: Your ark could be a daily ritual, a therapy practice, a trauma-informed community, a regenerative farm, or a soulful boundary. What are you building to withstand the storm?
4. Gathering the Animals (Two by Two)
- Biblical Reference: Noah brings a pair of every species.
- Modern Metaphor: This speaks to integration and balance—honoring both the masculine and the feminine, light and shadow, inner and outer.
- Application: What parts of yourself have you left behind? Which of them needs to come with you into this next era?
5. The Rain and the Flood Begin
- Biblical Reference: The world is washed clean.
- Modern Metaphor: Collapse is inevitable. Whether external or internal, the deluge comes.
- Application: Surrender. Let the old paradigms wash away. Grieve what you must. Trust the storm as initiation.
6. Floating in the Unknown
- Biblical Reference: The ark drifts.
- Modern Metaphor: The liminal space. The in-between. The cocoon.
- Application: This is the place of deep trust, mystical awareness, and radical presence. Let dreams and symbols guide you.
7. Sending the Raven and the Dove
- Biblical Reference: Noah tests the waters.
- Modern Metaphor: Raven is shadow work. Dove is hope and discernment.
- Application: Pay attention to what comes back to you. Learn to read the signs. Let intuition guide your next steps.
8. Landing on New Ground
- Biblical Reference: The ark settles. Dry land appears.
- Modern Metaphor: After transformation comes reintegration.
- Application: What are your new values? How will you live in alignment? Begin to shape the new world.
9. The Rainbow Covenant
- Biblical Reference: God promises not to destroy the earth again.
- Modern Metaphor: A vow. A sacred contract with life.
- Application: Make your own covenant. What are you here to protect? To create? To embody?
Metaphorical Insights from Ark Construction
1. Immensity = Collective Care
The ark was massive. This call was a call to build containers big enough to include others—in community, diversity, grief, and joy.
2. Precision = Sacred Design
The dimensions were exact. Build your ark with care and ritual. Tailor it to your soul’s architecture.
3. Three Levels = Integration
Body. Mind. Spirit. A true vessel attends to all levels of being.
4. Cubit = Embodied Wisdom
A cubit was a body-based unit. Let your design be rooted in somatic knowing.
5. No Rudder = Surrender
No one steered the ark. Trust the unknown. Let go of the illusion of control.

The Binary Illusion: Beyond Either/Or
The animals boarded two by two—a symbol of polarity. But we know the world is not binary.
- Gender, identity, and truth exist on spectrums.
- Good and bad are often intertwined.
- Our survival depends not on choosing sides, but holding paradox.
Invitation: Unlearn binary thinking. Make space for nuance. Let your ark carry the shapeshifter, the doubter, the in-between.
Journaling Prompts for Psychedelic and Spiritual Integration
- What storm am I currently navigating—personally, collectively, spiritually?
- What does my ark look like? What inner structures and outer systems will carry me through?
- Which parts of me want me to preserve them? Integrate them? Welcome them aboard?
- Where am I holding onto binaries that no longer serve me?
- What is the covenant I am ready to make—with life, Spirit, or the Earth?

A 15-minute internal journey into refuge, resilience, and sacred design.
Preparation: Create a quiet space. Light a candle. Place a hand on your heart. Breathe.
1. The Storm
Visualize dark clouds. Feel the collective turbulence. Whisper: “I witness the storm. I meet it with breath and presence.”
2. The Divine Whisper
Hear a whisper inside the wind. Ask: “What is my ark? What am I called to build?”
3. Building the Ark
Imagine the vessel forming—with intention, care, ritual. Say: “With grace, I build. With courage, I prepare. With faith, I protect the sacred within me.”
4. Entering the Ark
Step inside. Feel held. Rest. Let your nervous system soften. Let others hear your heart. Say: “As I step inside, I trust I am safe, I trust I am secure. I trust I am held, I trust this space.”
5. The Sign from the Sky
See a bird, a beam of light, a whisper of peace. Receive the sign. Say: “I trust the signs. I trust my timing. I trust my ark.”
